SSRG Roller Derby

What is roller derby?
Only the most fun you can have on eight wheels! The game consists of two thirty minute halves, split into two minute periods called jams. Five players from each team on the track at once, four blockers from each team form a pack, and one player from each team plays the position of jammer. The jammers must skate through the pack and score a point for each opponent they pass. So how do the blockers stop them? With shoulders, hips and booty! Elbows, tripping, blocking or overtaking while out of bounds will earn skaters a one minute stint in the penalty box. At the end of each jam there is a 30 second break and then it all starts again!

Who are the Suns State Roller Girls?
Sun State Roller Girls (SSRG) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to developing and promoting women’s flat track roller derby. The league aspires to advance the sport by creating a community of skaters and volunteers. Sun State Roller Girls was established in 2007 on Brisbane's south side and now has members from across Logan, Gold Coast and Brisbane. While only women compete, both men and women are encouraged to become league members and contribute in a variety of support roles including coaching, officiating and volunteering.

How do I join?
You can become a league member at anytime. To become a skater or referee, you must attend a tryout, these occur several times a year. You don’t have to be a great skater to attend tryouts. If you have some basic skating skills, we can teach you everything you need to know to be a great Roller Derby skater or referee.

How old do I have to be to skate for Sun State?
You must be 18 years of age.

How can I get ready for tryouts?
SSRG have regular tryouts for skaters and referees throughout the year, keep an eye out on our facebook and webpage for dates. The more time you can spend on skates before the tryouts, the better. There are a few skating rinks across Brisbane with open hours for the public where you can rent quad skates and work on your skating basics. Our home rink (Digi Roller Skating) also offers adult learn to skate lessons after hours.

What do I need to be able to do at tryouts?
You only need to have basic skating skills. Once you're a member we'll teach you what you need to know to play Roller Derby.

What equipment will I need for tryouts?
Every skater is required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a mouth guard and quad roller skates. We do not have gear to loan out.
You will be working hard so wear something non restrictive, light and breathable.

What happens after tryouts?
Skaters who are selected to join the league will begin their derby career learning basic skills before doing any contact (blocking). Once you’ve learned how to play Roller Derby and all the necessary skills, you'll be assigned to a team.

Are there a lot of injuries?
We work really hard to limit injuries by training to skate safely and work on injury-preventative exercises. As mentioned above, full protective gear is required for all skaters. For insurance purposes, you will be required to sign a waiver for tryouts.

I skate for another league. Can I join SSRG?
If you skate for another league, you're certainly welcome to attend a tryout - or transfer at a time that suits you.

If I have more questions, who do I ask?
